Will the Prince of Pot please step down?

Marc Emery is no prince. When will the media start saying “the self-styled Prince of Pot” [“There’s a smoky celebration in East Vancouver today ahead of Marc Emery’s release from prison”, web-only]?

If one wants to be a leader, it is best to show at least a little token humility and to acknowledge that one is only a part of a larger movement. Let us not forget Pythagoras, JFK, George Washington, William F. Buckley, Rudyard Kipling, Byron, Keats, Shakespeare, Picasso, Richard Feynman, Margaret Mead… the list goes on and covers centuries. Are all those names a bit before your time, Marc?

Perhaps, more contemporarily, you could cite the work of Keith Stroup and NORML or those of us who made submissions to the Le Dain Commission. Did you take your lumps at the Grasstown Smoke-in, Marc? But gosh, I guess all that is a little before your time too.

Marc and Jodie Emery, I do not doubt for one moment the sincerity of your commitment to decriminalizing marijuana, and I wish you well in doing your part once Marc returns home.

But please, get the fuck over yourselves.

Emery gave a huge amount of money to NORML. True, he is an attention seeking super troll but sometimes that's what it takes to shine light on your activism or the media won't pay attention otherwise. "Before your time" is a totally ridiculous statement considering he was one of the first so-called head shop owners in Canada and had his imported books on growing confiscated decades ago. He's called the prince of pot because he used to wear this ridiculous paper crown in his store and smoke up anybody for free who walked in. I approve of these shenanigans.

Thanks for putting into words what many of us are thinking! Although I think we can cut him *some* slack for that whole U.S. prison term thing.
Maybe we can come up with a date set in stone when he passes the torch, so to speak.

Emery succeeded, in the legalization movement, where many others have failed.
He is coming out of prison to a world where 2 states have legalized cannabis for recreational use.
Is he humble and self-effacing about it?
No, that's not his style. So what and who cares?
Marc is indeed the Prince of Pot; he has earned the title and paid for it with 5 years in a U.S. jail.

Mark Emery, Prince of Pot. Thank you God and may he have a speedy and safe return.
