Amid the alcohol-induced mayhem and the difficulty finding taxis, there's one more thing for people to worry about late at night in the Granville Entertainment District.

According to Vancouver police, there has been "a string of debit card thefts and frauds targeting intoxicated people".

Since January, nine incidents have been reported, but the cops suspect that this doesn't capture the full extent of this crime wave.

"Suspects are looking over the shoulders of people withdrawing money from ATM machines, and obtaining their PIN numbers," the VPD stated in a news release. "In some instances, once the transaction is finished, they steal the debit card—sometimes replacing it with an expired card so they remain unaware of the theft. They then use the card with the PIN to remove cash from the victim’s account."

On other occasions, a thief will tell the drunken person that he or she is holding the wrong card, which was left in the machine.

Then the thief swaps cards, giving the drunk an inactive card. Next, the thief uses the person's PIN number to withdraw cash using the authentic card.

Of course, it's easy to avoid these problems if you keep your PIN number covered while withdrawing cash.

It also helps if you're not completely pie-eyed and still have your wits about you.
