Update (July 28): The Pacific National Exhibition announced that after voluntary inspections were conducted on the Beast, the ride is being reopened today.

The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) announced today (July 27) that they have decided to voluntarily close the ride called the Beast for inspections.

The decision was made after an accident occurred yesterday at the Ohio State Fair on July 26 in Columbus, Ohio.

A ride called the Fire Ball broke apart while in motion on opening night, resulting in seven people injured (two were treated for critical injuries) and the death of 18-year-old Tyler Jarrell. The ride had passed several inspections.

The Fire Ball features six rows of seats that spin in the air as the structure swings like a pendulum.

Like the Fire Ball, the Beast is also a pendulum ride, and it reaches heights of over 125 feet (or 12 storeys) as it swings from side to side.

The Beast, the ride at the PNE, was made by the Netherland's KMG, the same company that manufactured the Fire Ball. The Beast opened in 2015 at the PNE and has had inspections twice daily before each operating day, as well as two annual inspections by a third-party industry contractor.

“It is important to understand a key difference between Playland's Beast and travelling models," PNE spokesperson Laura Ballance stated in a new release. "Our ride is a permanent structure assembled once and thoroughly inspected and tested prior to when it opened in 2015. Smaller travelling versions are, by their nature, continually assembled, operated, disassembled, and then shipped to their next location."

North American Midway Entertainment, an Indiana-based ride-operating company that provides midway attractions to fairs in 20 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces, announced on July 26 that it is closing the Fire Ball ride at Edmonton's K-Days and it will not be included at Toronto's Canadian National Exhibition in August.
