The three candidates vying for the NDP’s nomination in the federal riding of Burnaby-Douglas are in the final stretch of their respective campaigns.

SFU political scientist Kennedy Stewart sounded upbeat when reached by the Straight by phone today (February 23).

“Nominations are like job interviews,” Stewart said. “You talk about yourself, and hope that the membership will vote for you.”

Former City of North Vancouver councillor Sam Schechter is also seeking the nomination.

In a phone interview with the Straight, Schechter said that NDP supporters in the riding have informed him that health care and pension reform are two of the most important issues for them.

Community activist Alnoor Gova is amazed how the nomination campaign has engaged citizens in the riding.

“Democracy is alive,” Gova exclaimed on the phone, citing the standing-room-only audience at a candidates’ forum on February 22.

The nomination meeting will be held on Friday (February 25) at the Confederation Centre at 4585 Albert Street. Registration starts 6 p.m.
