Bedtime police sap the fun out of Vancouver

I have a suggestion for Barry Sharbo and all those who would have the city shut down at 9 p.m.: if he doesn’t like the noise from the PNE, he should move somewhere quieter [“ PNE Forum bans electronic music concerts after noise complaints”, web-only].

We live in a large city. Occasional noise is to be expected, particularly if one chooses to live next to a fairground. It is unfortunate that those who whine the loudest tend to get their way. When we talk about a cultural deficit in our city, this is the mentality that perpetuates it.

Don’t get me wrong—people are entitled to a good night’s sleep. However, it’s clear that we’ve taken our laudable livability goals and turned them into a cultish, dogmatic mantra, leaving many cultural sectors devoid of oxygen.

I lament yet another victory for the bedtime police—and yet another blow to those who would promote any kind of interesting happenings in Vancouver.

Pretty condescending attitude to neighours of noisy PNE, residents did not just move in but over 50 years PNE has got noisier, with longer hours, and is not the same animal of 1950. No other place in the city puts up with this except for the new BC Place noise generator. Either the city should enforce its own bylaw or buy out the adjacent lands and rebuild for density and in ways to overcome the noise generation. The death screams from the new high rise ride/drop from space is un-nerving in itself, read up on the psychological impact of so called 'ambient noise' of this sort.
