Bike-friendly boat shuttle proposed for New Westminster’s waterfront
A bike-friendly boat shuttle is being floated as a way to help cyclists travel between parts of New Westminster separated by the Fraser River.
The idea is to create a new link from the residential Queensborough neighbourhood to the waterfront Quay area, located near SkyTrain stations and the Central Valley Greenway cycling route.
The proposal would offer an alternative route for those who do not want to take a roundabout journey by land across the busy Queensborough Bridge.
The city’s advisory committee for transit, bicycles, and pedestrians has brought forward the latest version of the idea.
The committee suggests the boat shuttle could be a temporary solution until a planned pedestrian bridge to Queensborough is built in coming years. The proposed operating times are mornings and afternoons during the mid-week.
The committee has highlighted the need for the city to provide adequate docking facilities and lighting, and the potential for passengers to cover operating costs.
The committee has recommended the city look into the option. City council is to consider the matter during a meeting today (May 28) at 2 p.m.
