Conservatives should be muzzled, not scientists
In Charlie Smith's piece [" Expert says scientists muzzled", September 25–October 2], he notes that UVic climate scientist Andrew Weaver, "a lead author of three Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment reports, claimed that Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his cabinet have ignored the input of scientists while preparing the government's response to global warming".
This should be a reminder that the Conservative party's attitude on climate change has not changed one iota since Stephen Harper's cabinet minister Gary Lunn (Saanich–Gulf Islands) said: "Everywhere I look I see more uncertainty regarding the science used by the pro-Kyoto forces." While this quote (which begs the question "Where did he look?") is from December 2002 (Island Tides), it apparently still reflects their head-in-the-sand approach to this paramount issue.
