Greenpeace hangs banner from Lions Gate Bridge to protest tar sands

Comments

Greenpeace Canada activists staged a demonstration on the Lions Gate Bridge today (May 29) to protest oil pipelines to the B.C. coast.

Two demonstrators rappelled from the Vancouver bridge this morning, according to a news release from the environmental group.

The protesters deployed a banner that read: “save our coasts, no tar sands pipelines”.

Greenpeace Canada criticized the federal government for speeding up the approval process for pipeline projects and plans to weaken environmental law.

“There are better ways to create jobs and build an economy than supporting an industry that destroys land, rivers, communities, and drives climate change,’’ Greenpeace’s Melina Laboucan-Massimo said in the release.

“We need an end to tar sands pipelines that have no place in the green energy future Canada deserves.”

The three main high street banks in the UK (Barclays, HSBC and the Royal Bank of Scotland) are all involved in providing significant sums of project or corporate finance for oil extraction from Canadian tar sands.

I would urge you to consider deeply the implications of their actions, in the hope that YOUR organisation is able to see beyond short term profits and recognise your responsibility to both current and future generations.

And maybe you could do the same as me and just close your HSBC account and move it to a bank which takes more seriously the ethical issues involved in their investment policy ~ and that won't be RBS or Barclays.

How else will they ever learn if we keep condoning what they do with our money?

I only regret I didn't study the ethical issues and draw the line when they gambled on food prices, which makes people go hungry in poor countries. Perhaps I should have.

I din't call it a day when corporate governance didn't make them more transparent about their lending and investment practices. I really should have taken more notice.

I should have picked up on them not paying their fair share of corporate tax ~ the most basic tenet of good citizenship and, supposedly, corporate governance ~ I don't have an excuse, I just didn't.

But when I found out they were financing Armageddon for profit, with my money, I decided what to do and wrote about the ethical issues here and said...

Uh, uh. No way.

Game over!

These protestors should be out getting jobs and contributing to society rather than tangling up traffic and inconveniencing those of us who work for a living.

These useless scum should be chained to the anchor of a nuclear aircraft carrier and then dropped into deep water.

Its not a fair fight from the start because those making the decision will gain huge financially. Of course they are going to approve the pipeline and push it forward as fast as they can. That's the "beauty" of capitalism. All they hear is the clanking of coin in their pockets as it drowns out the sound of protest.

Hey Egami - why don't just stay at work 24/7 and not bother everyone else on your commute !

What did you do today that contributed to "society" ? What have you ever done ?

My guess knowing Greenpeace is that these guys got paid for this stunt more than you do in a month.

Like everyone, these protesters do have jobs. Thats how they pay for their massive student debt, the financial bailout of the banking sector and are still able to support their families.

These people make a huge personal sacrifice and we are all indebted to them for their work.

Keep it up guys.

It took me 20 minutes longer to get home from work.

I feel humans should die for this.

I just find it kind of ironic that in order to protest a move by the oil industry, these people tied up traffic, causing increased oil usage and increased pollution from all the idling vehicles.

re: J Harrison "Like everyone, these protesters do have jobs."

Really? Then why do they keep showing up at my house with clipboards begging for money? Begging is still begging whether you're holding a clipboard or not.

Hippies need to stop trolling so hard and just take some acid and fuck in the mud like the old days.

I propose a carbon-negative Lions Gate Acid Mud Fuck Music Festival in 2013. Bring some mud, dump it on the bridge, take some acid, and mud-fuck to the sounds of Miles Davis & Ke$ha.
Let's make it happen comrades.

The humourous part is they rode to the bridge on petroleum powered vehicles and used nylon ropes to hang the sign. Can anyone spell conundrum?
