Greens' Adriane Carr elected to Vancouver city council

Comments

Former B.C. Green party leader Adriane Carr has captured a seat on Vancouver city council.

Municipal elections 2011

The Green Party of Vancouver candidate came 10th in the race for council, coming just ahead of COPE councillor Ellen Woodsworth, who failed to win reelection.

With 135 of 135 voting divisions reporting, Carr had 48,648 votes.

Woodsworth garnered 48,557 votes.

Vision Vancouver saw all of its candidates for council—and elsewhere—elected.

The NPA's Elizabeth Ball and George Affleck came eighth and ninth to win spots on the 10-member body.

COPE was shut out of council, with Tim Louis and RJ Aquino also failing to win election.

A flaming case of narcissistic personality disorder, now in a fishbowl. This ought to be a fun show.

Adriane, I was thrilled to see a real Green make it onto council in Vancouver. At least one of my votes counted. Good luck!

I voted for her and Ellen Woodsworth. I bet there's a devil's handful of others who feel as stupid as I do now.

And here we have the least green member on council.

Good job "progressive vancouverites"

Oh wait, I forgot, this woman exactly embodies rich Vancouverites: Faux environmentalists who think capitalism can save the earth!

The good old Green party, mostly winning because uneducated voters simply assume "Green" sounds good.

Vision is already the most environmentalist party out there. They took major risks on things like bike lanes and local food, and were ridiculed for it. They've earned their stripes.

Carr on the other hand suggests bike free streets...

Would much rather have one of the truly progressive COPE candidates than her. She really is not a pleasant person to have to work with.

I can never bring myself to vote Green. Candidates like Carr are incoherent, self-centered flakes. She was given a free platform by the Straight to appeal to voters. Her big pitch? Banning bikes from "certain" streets. Oh, yes, and solving all the world's problems with unrestrained "free-market" capitalism. How does that work? Don't ask her. Thinking stuff out all the way through is hard work.
Don't make Ms. Carr's head hurt, or she'll get really annoyed.

Reading these comments reminds me of one of the reasons I didn't run this time. Rude, mean-spirited social media commentators. Good Luck Adriane. I'm pleased I 'endorsed' you, and pleased that you won!

Sure, but in reality, trade pays for everything. The choice is to ridicule capitalism and be shut out of any operational ability, or to coax it in the direction you would have it go. For an example of a role model of hybridized social and economic concerns see Newman's Own.

Mr. Gellar:

Here's hoping you never grow a backbone.
What did you call candidates for "social housing" at Olympic Village again? Refresh my memory, what was "D & Cs" supposed to stand for?

When she "clarified" her initial suggestion of bike-free streets to bus-only lanes it made me suspect that she either doesn't speak carefully sometimes or that she didn't realize how unpopular such thing would be.
I don't know if she was just scrambling to do damage control but in any case she'll have to meet everybody that lives in this city and it'll be educational for her on what not to say at least.

@Save Vancouver

The election campaign is over and the people have spoken. Time for everyone to work together to make Vancouver an even better city. While I would have preferred that Ellen would have won that spot, I sure that Adriane is committed to make Vancouver a better place to cycle. She did clarify her comment on bike free streets say it was only bike free bus lanes. While this still is problematic, she in general does seem committed to improving cycling in Vancouver.

I would put forward the polite view that having the big joust fought primarily by our development knights is a problem. I don't doubt that most of them will work for the Vancouver communities that they support and that support them. While I am pretty certain that COPE shot itself in the foot with its disrespectful treatment of David Cadman, I also know that they would have worked for their communities as well, and now this factor is entirely missing at City Hall.

Carr will be the comic relief at city hall. Kind of like a demented clown. Bike free streets...really? I don't buy her "clarifications". She was cravenly trying to appeal to road ragers and other reactionary right wing assholes. It worked and now Vancouver citizens will suffer the consequences of not having a passionate and experienced champion of social justice issues, Ellen Woodsworth, on council because a faux green flake couldn't control her lust for power and the best paying job she's ever had.

Dear John Simpson, if "Vision is already the most environmentalist party out there” why do they turn themselves into pretzels promoting energy leaking air conditioned glass towers that don’t do much except make certain people a lot of money?

Welcome Adriane, hope you can teach these self righteous clowns what green really means

I admire Carr's dedication and she has a clear, truly green stance. But as one commenter already alluded to, she's an ego-maniac and a complete limelight hog.

The really interesting question is whether she'll doubt-dip, ie take home both the city councillor salary of $64k per year, as well as the reportedly generous stipend she receives as Ms May's closest ally in the Green Party of Canada, via the $1.9 million in public funding to the GPC as a per-vote subsidy.

Something for Charlie Smith to look into?
