The recall of ground-beef products made by Alberta's XL Foods continues to grow.

Today (September 24), SuperValu-owned Albertsons announced it is recalling some ground-beef items sold by its stores in Washington, Oregon, and northern Idaho due to possible E. coli contamination.

Albertsons said the affected products are:

• All raw ground beef products sold through the full service counter case at the customer’s request and store-packaged ground beef products purchased from 9/3/12 through 9/21/12.

• Fresh Ground Beef Patties 80/20, 1 LB, UPC: 7-52907-60030, USE BY Date: 9/11/12

• Fresh Ground Beef Chub 73/27, 1 LB, UPC: 7-52907-18271, USE BY Date: 9/18/12 & 9/21/12

• Fresh Ground Beef Chub 73/27, 3 LB, UPC: 7-52907-18251, USE BY Date: 9/18/12 & 9/21/12

In Canada, the recall includes a variety of products sold under the brands Calahoo Meats, CO-OP, Douglas Meats, Entrepot de Viandes, Foodland, Freson Bros., Giant Tiger, IGA, Kirkland Signature, Loblaw, Metro, Northern, Presto and Club Entrepot, Reddi Food Solutions, Safeway, Sobeys, and Super C, as well as in unbranded packaging.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The agency is warning businesses and the public not to consume, sell, or serve the products affected by the recall.

i'm sure there are many Albertsons customers who regularly peruse the Straight. i love how all the "use by" dates are in the past.

support your local butcher - most of whom grind their own meat.

I worked in the meat industry for thirty years and the problem in producing ground beef for public use is that these machines that they use for grinding or making beef patties must be bacteria free or get E. coliO157:H7. We had people who's job was to check all machinery that were used to produce meet products for public and if they not clean they had a hold ticket put on it and could be used until food safety people were satisfied that it clean and each time a product was product a sample was taken and put on hold until it was deemed safe for human consumption. Even the trucks that came in to pick up the product had to clean or no product on the truck until cleaned. in the years i worked for the company we had only one major call back and when it did return to our plant we threw it out. this not the first that XL Foods has had problems with their meat products, they should follow a set rules that does allow any products that for human consumption to leave the plant unless it is found passed by their food inspection people not what.
