Japanese authorities seek to arrest anti-whaling activist Paul Watson
An arrest warrant has been issued for Canadian activist Paul Watson because of his alleged efforts to disrupt Japanese whale hunters, according to a statement posted on the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Web site.
“The Japanese government is desperate to stop the Sea Shepherd ships from returning to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary for the 2010 and 2011 season,” reads the April 29 statement from Watson.
Reports say Japan’s coast guard obtained the arrest warrant and authorities will seek to place the 59 year old on an Interpol wanted list.
Despite the warrant, Watson—a past contributor to the Straight—says the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will continue to “patrol and defend” the Antarctic waters.
