Last night, a late-night service for survival sex workers was honoured at the Naked Truth Adult Entertainment Awards, which took place in the Byrd Show Lounge in Surrey.

The Mobile Access Project, which was created by the Wish Drop-in Centre Society and the PACE (Providing Alternatives Counselling & Education) Society, won in the "Favour Advocacy/Support Organization" category.

The MAP van travels around the city every night, offering condoms, food, safety information, and harm-reduction and health supplies to prostitutes working the streets of the city.

The MAP project was in jeopardy in 2009 when the B.C. Liberal government cut off funding. Public pressure from numerous organizations, including the feminist legal organization West Coast LEAF, helped save this service.

The awards, which are chosen in an online voting system, were organized by Annie Temple, with the help of numerous volunteers.

She was granted the lifetime achievement award by the voters. In her acceptance speech, Temple thanked SFU graduate student Raven Bowen, sex workers' advocate Sue Davis, and Mistress Katia (otherwise known as Mz. Scream).

"She is one of my closest friends and over the years, she has been there for me in so many ways—particularly when I was chronically ill and my social life was practically nonexistent," Temple said.

She also thanked her daughter for supporting her and standing up for strippers after hearing someone make derogatory comments about them.

"I realize now that I was born to be a stripper," Temple added. "I was born to have a loud voice for the rights of adult entertainers. This isn’t something I chose. It chose me. It has been the most fulfilling experience, being a part of this amazing, vibrant community of entertainers and advocates. And it is the greatest honour to receive this award. Thank you all very much."
