NDP MLA Spencer Herbert to adopt partner’s surname following marriage

Comments5

Newly married NDP MLA Spencer Herbert plans to take his partner’s surname.

Today (March 30), the B.C. NDP sent out a media advisory announcing the Vancouver-West End MLA is in the process of legally changing his name.

On March 27, Herbert wed LGBT community activist Romi Chandra, his partner of 10 years, in a civil ceremony.

The MLA will now be known as Spencer Chandra Herbert and will use Chandra Herbert as his last name.

“Official Hansard citations may not reflect the change until the name change process is complete,” the advisory said.

This is nice and all... but is the simple adoption of a last name really newsworthy?

What is "really newsworthy" -- these days.

The adoption of a last name by Mr. Spencer (Chandra Herbert)-who is in a same sex relationship and who is engaged to be married -- and who is an elected MLA-is relevant because it is identical to what some hetero couples do -- in a legal marriage -- and is a first for BC me thinks.
