Pedestrian dies after being pinned by car in Kitsilano

Comments

Vancouver has registered its eighth traffic-related fatality of 2012.

Early this afternoon (June 11), a woman died after she was hit by a car in Kitsilano.

According to Vancouver police, a 67-year-old man was attempting to parallel park in the 2800 block of West Broadway. His car accelerated and struck the 52-year-old Vancouver woman, who was walking on the sidewalk.

The woman was pinned between the car and a storefront. She was rushed to hospital but died of her injuries.

Police say the driver remained at the scene, and they don't consider speed and alcohol to be factors in the fatality. The car is slated to undergo mechanical testing.

Investigators are asking witnesses to call 604-717-3012.

jonny .
This is why seniors should be tested yearly for their driving abilities. When you get old, you get slower, your vision is not as good, and everything just doesnt work as well as it did before.

67 barely qualifies as senior. I'm under 40 and have had my foot get stuck under the pedal too, age probably has little to do with it.

I agree that after a certain age, say 70, we should be tested yearly. However this type of accident can happen to anyone. We've all heard of cars going through 7/11 windows. Unfortuantely this time someone was killed. Really tragic. Just blocks from my home.

Elmer The Safety Elephant
Pedestrians need to keep their head on a swivel at all times. I wasn't there but I can imagine as the vehicle pulled up to park the woman should have waited for it to come to a complete stop, but what is always the case people tend to not pay attention to the risks that are all around them with large moving objects. I believe this tragedy was avoidable if the women and all others for that matter paid attention.

Someone should walk up behind you one day on the sidewalk and blindside you with a haymaker to see if you are paying attention to the risks around you.

So people in Canada, once they hit a certain age (as ppl have mentioned..70), don't have to get their eyes checked annually?

are you kidding??
if you know nothing about aging, shut the fuck up.
these ageist comments are revolting. Exactly why are insurance rates higher for males under 25?? Perhaps THEY need to be tested every year.
or how about all those idiots i see texting while they are driving.
Age has nothing to do with it.

Questioning the deaths associated with car culture
It is our over-reliance on car culture that creates such senseless tragedies. If this old man did not feel he "had" to drive (whether by choice or necessity) and could instead take a safer transit choice, this death perhaps could have been avoided. Cars are dangerous. We should only use them when we really need them, and we should have safer alternatives like transit, biking and walking.

Lets refrain from being so judgemental
People the pedestrian was just walking on the sidewalk like all of us do everyday, she was not crossing the street or doing anything that puts her at fault for anything. The driver was just parking his car, not speeding or doing anything reckless. Accidents do happen unfortunately. I feel bad for all parties involved, the poor womans family must be devastated, and the driver must be going out of his mind with guilt and shock. Please be respectful when making these judgements of other peoples misfortunes, because one day it might be you, and wouldn't you hate if those judgements fell upon you?
