Photos: Jack Layton memorial attracts a large Vancouver crowd

Comments

The north lawn of the Vancouver Art Gallery was filled with people tonight who had come to pay their last respects to NDP Leader Jack Layton.

Among the crowd of hundreds was a large number of NDP politicians. At the federal level, they included MPs Don Davies and Jinny Sims.

Provincial MLAs in attendance included the leader, Adrian Dix, along with Harry Bains, Jenny Kwan, Shane Simpson, and Raj Chouhan. Vancouver park commissioners Aaron Jasper and Raj Hundal were also there, as was former NDP premier Glen Clark.

“My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”

I feel selfish to lose Jack, as he was such an amazing person and perhaps one of the most evolved human beings in this country.

However I know that he is on to a wonderful, exciting new reality. One he truly deserves.

He is an inspiration for all of us and we will cherish his memory.

What's particularly galling for me is to go to work this morning and seeing the same bully pulpit corporate media outlets who repeatedly crucified Jack and everything he stood for now going out their way to eulogize them. And no, I don't believe that you can disagree with someone and still respect him. Not when you threw around smears like the accusations of Jack and Olivia ripping of a social housing project, Jack visiting a massage parlor, the "illegal" coalition and of course the "Taliban Jack" smear.

If you don't believe in fair markets over free markets, health care, affordable housing and education for ALL, energy sources that don't endanger the planet, the right of workers to organize and bargain collectively, and equality for GLBT people, you have no right to eulogize Layton because YOU DON'T KNOW JACK!!!

Jack and I were born in the same year, so I've seen as many politicians as he has, and it would be fair to say that the number who were also great leaders, regardless of their political stripe, was very small, and of those, only two or three ever became prime ministers. Jack was one of the best people, and best leaders, this country was ever blessed with. Let's not let that go. Let's all try to be better human beings, and make Canada that great country that we all know it can be.
