Prof questions CBC TV’s framing of the news

Comments

To anybody following CBC TV’s news and current affairs over the past five years, it’s no surprise that far from tilting leftward, the Mother Corp. gives disproportionate access to Conservative politicians, as noted in Richard Stursberg’s book [“ CBC News doesn’t tilt left”, May 17-24]. An even broader concern is how CBC is framing issues. For example, neoliberal commentators like Andrew Coyne have virtually free rein for free-market fundamentalist rants, including presenting the Occupy and Quebec student protests as problems to be managed rather than as legitimate movements for social change.

The myth of “left liberal media” is relentlessly promoted by those with a vested interest in shifting the political goal posts further to the right. Democracies need strong independent public broadcasters, but the CBC is not well fulfilling its mandate to represent fairly the political diversity of Canadians, including the nearly one-third of voters who made the NDP Canada’s official Opposition last year. As the slogan of the recent online campaign says, it is indeed time to “reimagine CBC”.

Wow. I don't see that at all when watching the CBC. They definitely frame the news in a leftist way. Just because they have one guy balancing things out doesn't mean they are conservative leaning. If the contents of the news were left up to University profs, they would only show the opinions of anarchists and marxists! Thank goodness that is not the case, yet.

I've never seen such a disgraceful shift of focus, as what has been happening on the CBC. For instance: Hockey Night In Canada equated with militarism and our "Cherry/Hillier Heroes" in Afghanistan. This, from one of the finest media any where in the world with world class presentations of the arts and theatre. Now we are subject to "Being Erica", "Republic of Doyle", and a subjective love-in with Israeli politics. I fear for the girls on "Fifth Estate", the only credible program left to view and enjoy.

I am seriously considering taking a Master degree in Communication with a focus on propaganda in Canadian media over the past 25 years -- --

@Glen P
What would you do with such a degree? Would someone employ you with such an education?

And why are you telling us about something you are merely considering?
