Protest planned at Vancouver Art Gallery in response to Israeli attacks

Comments

Supporters of the Palestinian Youth Movement will gather at 2 p.m. today (November 18) at the Vancouver Art Gallery to protest against Israel's deadly air strikes on Gaza.

Israel has defended its attacks, which reportedly killed 17 civilians today, as a reasonable response against rocket attacks from Gaza.

One Israeli attack obliterated a building in Gaza City, according to a Gaza health worker, killing four kids and four women.

"In an effort to amplify our outrage against Operation Pillar of Defense and support the people of Gaza, the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) urges all members and allies to demonstrate, protest, and hold sit-ins in as many cities as possible on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18th," the group stated in a release to the media. "Let the world hear our indignation to end this brutal invasion! We urge all people of conscience from around the world to take to the streets and protest against this heinous offensive being launched by the imperialist Zionist state against the people of Gaza. We implore you to stand up and resist this reprehensible act of aggression against our people. Do not let one more Palestinian life be lost."

What about the Syrians killing hundreds of Syrians every day? How come nobody is protesting that? Arabs are killing hundreds of Arabs a day, and somehow that's ok? But Israel is defending itself against unprovoked attacks, and somehow they're wrong?

Yes, there is plenty of indignation to be had... for the ruthless and cowardly treatment of its people by Hamas, firing rockets from populated areas and hiding behind innocent people. And then to blame everyone but themselves. For shame.

Funny these Palestine fans never protested Hamas launching rockets at Isreal every day for 12 years. Suddenly the Isrealis are the bad guys when they defend themselves.

Are there any local protests calling for a ceasefire? I would be interested in attending one.

There is a clear oppressor and the oppressed. Who has the power and must be checked against the rule of law? The argument of self defense is meaningless without context and history. The UN should enforce a cease-fire and end the blockade. Force the oppressor to compromise.

Don't want anymore lives lost? How about Gaza stop what THEY started? STOP firing missiles at Israeli civilians!

Wish there was a counter protest that I could attend to show my support for the people of Israel.

Also the fact that this group calls Israel "the imperialist Zionist state" says a lot about why there isn't peace in the Middle East.

It's called Israel, idiots, and it's real.

The Zionist Nazis should stop their ethnic cleansing of Palistine and put an end to apartheid and their Holocaust. The real Jewish people are fed up.

It saddens me when people have been led to believe Palestinians were the first to be violent in this conflict. If people only knew the situation in reality they would then see who desperately needs to defend themselves.

This is a complex subject filled with so much rhetoric that even jews disagree about the appropriate response to intimidation from rocket fire. We must resolve to understand that both sides are responsible for their actions, and violence only leads to more violence. The one distinction that can arguably elevate jews to a higher moral argument is that Hamas is sworn to the destruction of Israel as a home for the jewish people and it is in their charter to never recognize Israel's right to exist. From the jewish view, they respect the Palestinian right to self-determination, but are loath to give up land that they fought for and that compromises their security without a durable peace treaty. That's the difference. One side refuses to accept the other's right to exist, while the other side sees no reason to recognize the demands of a group that will not grant them a fundamental dignity. This does not mean that aggression and violation of law should be permitted. Each side should be held accountable to their obligation to see an end to conflict. Jews vigorously debate this subject and are part of a free society http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ux4JU_sbB0. The media does not report about any such debates in the arab world, nor do we have any reason to believe that such debates exist. Leaving most people to conclude that Hamas demands are unrealistic because they are not grounded in the reality of their situation. You can't sow hatred, stage an offensive of rocket fire and then claim resistance.
