Support workers at Simon Fraser University's Vancouver campus plan to walk off the job and set up picket lines on Friday (October 19).

About 70 CUPE Local 3338 members at SFU's Harbour Centre and Woodward's facilities will start picketing at 8:30 a.m., according to their union.

CUPE 3338 says its members have been without a contract since 2010, and claims there's been "virtually no progress" in over two years of negotiations with the university. In a news release issued today (October 18), the union notes that its main issues are inflation protection, job security, and a wage increase.

"SFU has arbitrarily decided it will not sit down and bargain in good faith with us," CUPE 3338 president Lynne Fowler said in the release. "It has chosen instead to focus on its broken pension plan and deny its CUPE employees the right to negotiate a new collective agreement."

According to CUPE, other buildings on the downtown campus will not face picket lines on Friday. Local 3338 served 72-hour strike notice on October 1.

On its labour-update website, SFU posted today this message: "This morning posters have been placed on campus which purport to be official SFU communication regarding plans to minimize the impact of picket lines. The information in these posters is completely false.

"SFU does not communicate through posters and this website will provide ongoing official updates."
