A Canada Border Services Agency officer has been airlifted to hospital after a shooting at the Douglas border crossing in Surrey.

According to Surrey RCMP, investigators believe the suspect in the incident, which took place this afternoon (October 16), shot himself afterward. The man, who was trying to cross into Canada from the United States, is now dead.

“Surrey RCMP are in the early stages of this investigation and still trying to determine the sequence of events,” Cpl. Bert Paquet said in a news release. “Right now our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer and her family.”

According to police, the CBSA officer suffered "serious injuries", but she was breathing and conscious during transport to hospital.

The Douglas border crossing, also known as the Peace Arch crossing, was closed in both directions "indefinitely".

The RCMP says it plans to interview witnesses and obtain video surveillance footage as part of its investigation.
