The RCMP has announced homicide charges in the shooting death of Maple Batalia on September 28, 2011.

Gurjinder "Garry" Dhaliwal faces one count of first-degree murder. He is reportedly a former boyfriend of Batalia, a popular 19-year-old model and health-sciences student who was shot in a parkade at SFU's Surrey campus.

Gursimar Bedi is charged with manslaughter and with being an accessory after the fact.

Batalia's parents Harkirat and Sarjit, and her sister Roseleen attended an RCMP news conference early this evening.

Her family raised $50,000 for the Maple Batalia Memorial Fund, which was created to provide financial aid to health-sciences students.

Earlier this year, Karmaface Cosmetics announced a Maple Batalia lip gloss in honour of Batalia, who was a friend of company founder Brandi Leifso.

"She had a very great career ahead of her—it was really starting to blossom," Leifso told the Straight last summer.
