Vancouver police recommended 52 charges against 20 suspects today (December 19) in relation to the June 15 Stanley Cup riot.

To date, a total of 215 charges against 80 suspected rioters have been forwarded to Crown counsel, including a first round of charge recommendations announced on October 31.

Crown counsel has so far approved 69 criminal charges against 27 suspects, all of whom have turned themselves in or been arrested, according to Vancouver police.

Inspector Les Yeo of the Integrated Riot Investigation Team said police will be launching “additional strategies” in the new year to increase traffic to their website to help identify suspected rioters.

“We’re not backing off; more arrests and more charges are just around the corner,” Yeo said in a statement.

Charges of participating in a riot were recommended against each of the 20 suspects announced today, while 17 charges of mischief, five charges of assault, and five charges of break and enter were also recommended to Crown counsel.

The average age of the 20 suspects is 19 years old, according to Vancouver police.

I agree that there must be a penalty paid for the damages caused in the riot but why ruin the lives of a bunch of young people who got caught up in the moment with a criminal record. Make them pay for damages and do comunity work. That will be a better teacher than any prison time. Besides the jails are full now and what little room there is we need for real criminals.
