WestJet plane slides off tarmac at snowy Kelowna airport

An Edmonton-bound WestJet plane slid off the tarmac at Kelowna International Airport where wintry conditions were disrupting service.

At around 8 a.m. today (January 7), the nose wheel and two main gear wheels of the Boeing 737-700 slid off of the apron, the area where planes are parked and boarded, WestJet said.

The aircraft was carrying 134 passengers and six crew members but there were no injuries, the airline said in a message on its Facebook page.

WestJet said the aircraft would be checked for any damage. Passengers, who were offloaded from the plane, would be offered spots on other flights or a hotel room for the night.

Heavy snowfall and poor visibility at the airport had caused temporary runway closures today. Flight delays and cancellations were also reported.
