As part of its year-round programming initiative, the DOXA Documentary Film Festival is presenting a free outdoor screening of the Aubrey Plaza–fronted Pistol Shrimps on August 24 at Robson Square.

Directed by Vancouver-born filmmaker Brent Hodge, the documentary follows the Pistol Shrimps, a women’s recreational basketball team in L.A., and its meteoric rise to the top of a civic, all-ladies basketball league.

Throughout the film, Hodge offers glimpses into the lives of a number of the team’s members—including actress-comediennes Molly Hawkey and Angela Trimbur—as they face off against hilariously dubbed teams like the She-Cago Bulls, the Space Glam, and the LA Nail Clippers.

Pistol Shrimps was originally screened in Vancouver as part of the 15th annual DOXA Documentary Film Festival in May. This month’s free screening will be an encore presentation.

The documentary will be shown on August 24 at 8:30 p.m. at Robson Square (800 Robson Street). The pre-show takes place at 8 p.m.

The DOXA screening joins a slew of other complimentary outdoor film presentations taking place in Metro Vancouver this summer, such as the Evo Summer Cinema Series at Stanley Park.
