Open letter: Business leaders ask B.C. Liberal, NDP candidates for "effective" climate change policy

Comments

A group of over 100 business leaders have signed the following letter to the B.C. Liberal and NDP leadership candidates:

February 16, 2011

To all Liberal and NDP leadership candidates,

British Columbia is at an important juncture as both of your parties select new leaders.

The past three years have seen the province make significant strides to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build a lower-carbon economy. As business leaders, we’ve welcomed those initial efforts and now look to the future leaders of all parties to continue charting that course.

If the leadership races result in lost momentum for action on climate change, it would exacerbate what are already challenging times for business in B.C. by creating investment uncertainty and undermining confidence in B.C.’s economy.

In contrast, continuing to move forward in an orderly and predictable manner will allow the province to reduce emissions, encourage other jurisdictions to take similar actions, and capitalize on an immense economic opportunity.

As potential leaders of your parties and the province, we encourage you to continue guiding the province toward those opportunities with efficient and effective climate change policy. We also encourage you to make and enable the investments needed to maintain the competiveness of B.C.’s economy, and continue efforts to forge partnerships that broaden the scope of action and opportunity.

Thank you for considering our input at this pivotal point in B.C.’s history.

Aren't these the guys who back Falcon? Making pots of money off the less fortunate? Sucked in by Al Gore's movie and his promise of lots of economic opportunities? Hmmn, given the expanding debt in this province, let's hope no one answers them.

Business leaders are the problem here! That's why we have Climate Change in the first place. Their greed, to make ever more $$$$$, is destroying the planet.

The BC Liberals are all those "business leaders" that don't get it. They think we need more growth and climate change solutions. That's the oxymoron. You can't have both.

The business world of more growth at climate change's expense is the problem.

When, if ever, will the business world get the picture.

The BC Liberals may be many things but under Premier Campbell they entrenched in law (not platitudes) the most ambitious climate change program in the country. It's almost the most far reaching effort on the
continent.

These guys are just trying to feed from the trough. They are only concerned about their own profitability. They encourage government to impose rules and regulations so we can be taxed into the poor house.
The asinine fools we have disguised as politicians, who owe their positions to these people, will likely follow their advice. I thought the carbon tax was supposed to provide the solution to climate change. Control sun spots and you can affect change in climate.
The politicians voted themselves a raise to encourage the best and the brightest to run for office. When is that going to happen? It’s like watching monkeys in the zoo, they all just sit and groom each other and wait to be fed. At least monkeys are entertaining. These clowns are not.
I am a leader in my own business and I resent these people peddling their influence. Provide a service or product people want and leave politics to the citizens. Political contributions by business or unions should be banned, and no one individual should be able to contribute more than $50.00. Our political leaders are not even worth that. They are a total waste of the air they breathe.
