Take another little look at this show now, baby. You know you'll like it and it'll make you feel good. Janis Janus, Jan Kudelka's homage to Janis Joplin, which has already played Vancouver for a couple of very short runs, will be at the Commodore Ballroom on Saturday (June 11). Don't miss it. If it were only a tribute show, it would be fantastic: Kudelka makes herself look and sound eerily like the dead singer-and re-creating Joplin's spine-tingling repertoire of wails and whispers is no mean feat. But this production, which was directed by Aiyyana Maracle, goes much further. It's also a searing character study and an avant-garde piece of art that never stops being entertaining, even for a moment.
