PRODUCTION GUIDELINES

  • Free ad production is provided when ads are booked and material received within deadlines. Advertisers must provide clear and explicit instructions for the production of their ad.
  • Ads produced by the Georgia Straight must be booked in one of the standard modular sizes.
  • Artwork submitted for design of ad material must be high enough quality for scanning. (Half-tones to be scanned, colour photocopies, low-resolution computer printouts, and faxed artwork are not acceptable).
  • Digital material is the preferred format for ad submission where ad production is not required by the Georgia Straight production department. Because the Georgia Straight is produced fully digitally, we are unable to accept film or plate-ready negatives. If press-ready art is submitted, it must be in a format able to be scanned into our digital workflow.

The deadline is at 5pm, the Monday prior to publication.

All digital ads must be supplied with laserprints of all separations plus a composite. This is to ensure that we have something to proof the digital files against once printed (it does not have to be at 100% size).

FTP SITE INSTRUCTIONS

For FTP file transfers, use our FTP site at ftp.straight.com.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, a bulletin board system that allows you to read and/or write files in a shared setting. You will need an application capable of communicating with a FTP site. (Anarchie is a $10 shareware product that does an excellent job, located at www.stairways.com.

If you haven't yet been assigned a username or password:

If you have not yet been given a username or password for the FTP site, you will need to log on as a guest.

Use our FTP site at ftp.straight.com. User name: guestclients Password: guest

If you would like to be set up as a registered user, with private access, please call our Production Department at 604-730-7090 where you will then be given an appropriate username and password to use for our FTP Site. Follow the instructions below to log into the site once you have this log-in information.

Once you have your username and password:

The best way to use the Georgia Straight FTP site is to use FTP software such as Anarchie or Fetch for the Mac, or WS-FTP for the PC. In logging on to our FTP site, you will need to enter our server IP number; your username; and your password.

Using your Web Browser (Netscape or MSIE): in the web address field, enter the following (or copy and paste) replacing the words "username" and "password" with the actual words you've been given as a username and password (leave the colon intact):

ftp://username:password@ftp.straight.com

For example, if you've been given the username "mike" and the password "purple", enter this: ftp://mike:purple@ftp.straight.com Before sending your ad material to our FTP site, we require that you do a full collect of all related files (this includes all embedded fonts and graphics). All files will need to be compressed and saved as a Self-Extracting Archive (.sea). You will also need to convert your files from Binary to ASCII to transfer to the Internet. On the Internet, BinHex is the most commonly used format for Mac files that have already been compressed. You can BinHex a file through Stuffit Deluxe, or most other compression programs. Post the file on our FTP site by copying it into the appropriate folder.

You are also required to fax a composite as well as separations (if relevant) so we have something to reference our output to. Our fax number is 604-730-7012.

And finally, telephone your sales rep to notify us that the file has arrived and is ready for output.
