Charlie Smith

The editors who work behind the scenes make Charlie Smith appear far more intelligent than he really is. In fact, these editors make most of the writers look smarter, but Charlie is the only one willing to admit this. He has been editor of the Georgia Straight since 2005 and before that, he was news editor. He's fascinated by other cultures and is the only non-Indian in the company to wear a turban in the Vaisakhi parade. Every once in a while, Charlie babbles a few words in Cantonese to try to impress his peers. They usually just roll their eyes and sigh. It's always a good idea to try to contact Charlie after the paper goes to the printer late Wednesday afternoon rather than in the previous 24 hours when he's usually rushing to meet the deadline.
