Vancouver Taser watch 2007

CKNW has reported that Vancouver police are the latest to be involved in a Taser-related incident.

According to Inspector Eric Grummisch, VPD officers were called to the 900 block of Thurlow in the afternoon of November 29, where a woman had locked herself in a room after threatening her landlord.

Police arrived and after negotiations, the woman emerged with five “sharp kitchen knives, carving knives”, the report quoted Grummisch as saying. She ignored requests to drop her weapons and advanced on officers, he continued.

At that point, the woman was shot with a Taser.

Following the incident, the woman was taken to a hospital for “mental issues”. It is not believed that she suffered any serious injury from the Taser.

On November 25, CBC News reported that a 20-year-old woman was shot with a Taser by RCMP officers in a North Vancouver grocery store. That report states that the woman was seen waving knives and stabbing fruit inside the store.

After being Tasered and arrested, the woman was taken to a hospital for a full medical examination, where no serious injuries were found.

In related news, a November 30 CBC News report states that a biomedical engineer “with ties to the company that makes Tasers” has claimed that stun guns are safer than Tylenol.

“As far as an electronic controlled device killing you, this stuff is safer than Tylenol,” said Dr. Mark Kroll, speaking at a recent Las Vegas conference on in-custody deaths.

According to a November 30 story in the Globe and Mail, Ontario deputy chief coroner James Cairns was scheduled to speak at the same event, but dropped out because he had to testify at an inquiry in Ontario.

The Globe and Mail reported that Dr. Cairns has spoken in support of Tasers in the past, and has allowed Taser International to pay for his hotel and travel expenses when speaking at conferences on Tasers.
