Heath Ledger’s death ruled accidental overdose of prescription pills

Heath Ledger’s cause of death has been ruled an accidental overdose, Reuters has reported.

The New York medical examiner’s office found six prescription drugs in the young actor’s body. Included in the lethal mix were painkillers, tranquilizers, and sleeping aids.

On January 22, Straight.com reported that Ledger had been found dead in his NYC apartment.

The last interview the Straight ran with Ledger was in November of last year for the film I'm Not There.

Anna Nicole Smith, another celebrity, though perhaps of a different stature than Ledger, was found dead in February 2007. Smith’s autopsy revealed that 11 prescription drugs were in her system at the time of death.

A rising star with budding potential, Ledger’s passing should serve to underscore the dangers of prescription pills.

An excerpt from a statement made by Ledger's father after the medical examiner's findings were released reads:

"While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."
