International cinema to keep you busy post–VIFF

Phew, the craziness of the Vancouver International Film Festival has finally subsided, with a wrap-up on Friday, October 10, and a few VIFF repeats. But now that it's over, what will we do with all our time?

Well, kids, there's plenty of international cinema playing on local screens.

The Pacific Cinémathí¨que (1131 Howe Street) is presenting Sweet Dreams: Slovenian Cinema, a collection of eight features taken from the Slovenian retrospective shown in July in New York City by the Film Society of Lincoln Centre. The collection began on Sunday (October 12) and runs until Thursday, October 23.

Meanwhile, get ready to say merhaba as the Turkish Canadian Society is presenting the 2006 Turkish film Dondurmam Gaymak (Ice Cream, I Scream), about an independent ice cream seller competing against big brands, at the Cinémathí¨que on Sunday, October 19. Admission is $7. There'll be a reception starting at 12:30 p.m. with Turkish food and drinks, and the screening will start at 1 p.m.

And there's also the first Brazilian Film Festival of Vancouver starting on October 22 and running until October 26. In addition to the screenings, filmmakers will be in attendance and there'll also be workshops. Check out Ken Eisner's feature about it.

So there's still plenty of movie-watching to take in. (Sigh. A cinephile's work is never done.)
