Burrard Bridge bike lane trial moves one step forward

A bike-lane trial on Burrard Bridge next spring is one step closer to reality.

Today (December 18), council voted 10-1 in favour of Vision Vancouver councillor George Chow’s motion asking that city staff report back on council’s options for the trial, including its possible duration.

NPA councillor Suzanne Anton was the lone no vote.

Engineering services manager Tom Timm told council he would like to report back to the city’s transportation and traffic committee on March 3, 2009. At that time, council will know whether staff support a one-lane reversible trial or reallocating two traffic lanes to bikes and in-line skaters.

Timm hinted to council that he and his department favour the latter.

“We believe that a two-lane trial would give better information and all the information you need,” Timm said.

Timm also said he would like the trial to start around the end of April and end sometime after Labour Day 2009.
