Time running out on York Theatre deal

The clock is ticking on the York Theatre deal that would ensure the historic venue's future.

On December 18, city council voted unanimously to consider 100-percent funding for the York through a mix of density transfer, property-tax exemption, and capital funding.

That move paved the way for developer Bruno Wall--who wants to renovate the theatre and turn over its programming to the Vancouver East Cultural Centre--to make an offer to purchase the site from Vintage Development Corp. president Paul Phillips, but so far no deal has been signed.

With a 120-day protection order on the theatre set to run out this Thursday (January 15), and with Phillips recently stating he was still intent on demolishing the venue, its future is still not assured.

I'll bet if they said the theatre would be turned into a homeless shelter or low-cost housing, they could get the funding needed to save that wonderful theatre.
