Vancouver's West End clubs on the move

With the Odyssey Night Club’s lease ending and the Majestic and Davie Village Café & Bar now closed, West End nightlife is in transition. Davie Village Café, which hosted numerous community parties, was shuttered in November. The Majestic (1138 Davie Street), a drag queen–themed resto-lounge that opened in May 2007, closed its doors on December 31 but will reopen tonight (January 15) as Pulse Nightclub.

“The Majestic didn’t really have an identity,” manager Steve Jennings told the Straight, “except in the beginning when it was a show lounge.”¦It kind of got lost in the last year.” The redesign will draw inspiration from the Quebec scene: “We just got back from Montreal in early January, and we’re hoping to implement a lot of what we’ve seen over there here in Vancouver.” There’ll be go-go boys dancing above the bar, VIP areas, and DJ and drag queen nights. “If a straight guy walks in, he’s gonna really know he’s in a gay bar,” Jennings said.

Meanwhile, Odyssey co-owner Michael Levy said that while a new venue has been found for the gay club—the old location of the Starlight Theatre on Denman at  Barclay—a move-in date hasn’t yet been set. The Odyssey’s landlord, the City of Vancouver, issued a notice last May that it would be converting the club’s current building into supportive housing. Levy said the club has asked if the move from its 1251 Howe Street location can be postponed again. “They’ve extended us one extension already,” Levy said, “and we’re just asking for a little bit more time until our new location is ready.”
