It’s only a few weeks until the annual Hastings St. Indie Recording Sessions, and organizers are taking applications. Now in its third year, the event offers musicians and bands with members between the ages of 13 and 19 the chance to play in front of an audience, with Canucks tickets, computers, and a grand prize of professional studio time going to the 8 to 10 performers who make the cut.
It’s the brainchild of Bob Gilson of the Hastings Street Media Lab, a not-for-profit group offering creative opportunities to inner-city youth. Among the Media Lab’s other accomplishments is Vancouver Youth Radio, which began broadcasting in August 2006. This year’s sponsors for the Hastings St. Indie Recording Sessions include Templeton, Britannia, and Gladstone high schools. Proceeds will go toward arts-program funding for all three. The sessions take place at Ray-Cam Cooperative Centre (920 East Hastings Street) on February 6 between 4:30 and 8:30 p.m. Info is at www.vancouveryouthradio.com/.
