Most Canadians oppose ISP levy in support of homegrown programming

Four out of five Canadians are against proposals to impose levies on Internet service providers to support Canadian TV programming on-line, according to a new poll.

The majority of respondents—79 percent—to an on-line survey, released today (March 12) by Angus Reid Strategies, said such a levy was “unnecessary and/or inappropriate”.

Only 21 percent thought that the levy would be “a worthwhile initiative to help ensure that there will continue to be high quality Canadian TV programming in the future”.

In B.C., 83 percent reject the levy, while 17 percent support it.

The on-line survey polled 1,395 Canadian adults.

The proposed levy would be a small fee added to monthly Internet bills to support the production of Canadian programming on-line.
