Politicians like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Barack Obama post political updates. Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher send each other love notes. Athletes post messages during halftime and tell followers what they are eating. Porn stars vent, and celebrities gossip. Celebrities of all kinds are revealing themselves to the public on an entirely new level by tweeting via the microblogging service Twitter.
On the site that describes itself as a “Global community of friends and strangers answering one simple question: What are you doing?”, average Joes and celebrities alike are updating friends, fans, and followers. Some of their tweets are boring; others cause a stir in the media.
Here are five celebrity Twitterers worth following, and some sample tweets:
1. Ellen DeGeneres
Talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres uses Twitter to post funny photos and videos, to keep her fans updated on what she’s doing every day, and to get them involved in her shows.
“Hey, followers. It’s your leader. Tweet me a phrase you want me to say in today’s show and I’ll pick one to say.” (March 19)
2. Charlie Villanueva
The Milwaukee Bucks forward created controversy with a tweet sent out during the halftime of a game against Boston about stepping up his game. He also posts about the boring things other people often tweet about, like what he’s eating.
“In da locker room, snuck to post my twitt. We’re playing the Celtics, tie ball game at da half. Coach wants more toughness. I gotta step up.” (March 15)
“So I pretty much got all the basics: different kind of juices, bread, eggs, milk, chicken, yogurt, bananas, apples, cereal, the usual stuff.” (March 22)
3. Britney Spears
Posts by Brit herself and her manager Adam Leber have made her one of the most followed celebrities on Twitter. She keeps her followers up to date and doesn’t go more than a few days between updates. Her tweets range from getting a strike in bowling to her tour whereabouts and the photo of the day.
“Went bowling with my dancers last night. We had the best time. PS- I got a strike! -Brit (See a pic from bowling @ http://britneyspears.com)” (March 14)
“NYC....Here I come!!! -Brit” (March 11)
4. Martha Stewart
Martha’s dogs Francesca and Sharkey (@TheDailyWag) are even supposedly on Twitter. She tweets about dinner parties, what she’s doing around the house, and the latest products and things she thinks are useful.
“Ask me a question on my radio show RIGHT NOW. Call 1-866-675-6675 from 4:00 pm EST to 5:00 pm EST. When you call mention Twitter!” (March 24)
“Today is beautiful-lots of gardening, planting and all the boxwoods will be limed- they like sweet soil i will fit in a horseback ride also” (March 22)
5. Shaquille O’Neal
Shaq tweets every hour or so—mostly from his BlackBerry using TwitterBerry, his posts full of spelling mistakes—about what he’s doing. He tells fans where he is, what he’s doing, and about free game tickets for the first person who says “Twitter” at the ticket booth. He once told his followers that he was craving Dairy Queen, and about an hour later put up a link to a photo of him licking a Dairy Queen ice-cream cone, breaking his diet. He’s quite entertaining and worth following.
“Can I plaese cheat on my diet and go to dairy. Queen pls pls pls” (March 19)
