Spinal Tap's Harry Shearer sets stage for Vancouver

The men behind Spinal Tap are coming to Vancouver for the Unwigged & Unplugged Tour—and the mock rock band's bassist Harry Shearer has jokingly asked the Vancouver police to be nice. This week on his satirical radio program, Le Show, the legendary comedian, actor, musician, writer, and the voice behind many characters on The Simpsons was giving “The Apologies of the Week”. Among them was Vancouver police chief Jim Chu's apology to Vancouver Province photographer Jason Payne, whose camera was confiscated when he took pictures following a police shooting in East Vancouver on April 5.

“Be nice to me, Vancouver police, will you?” asked Shearer, before quoting Chu, who said that media personnel have special protections in law. “Also guys on an acoustic music tour,” he quipped. The mockumentary star also poked fun at Billy Bob Thornton, who apologized for his now-notorious CBC Radio interview with Jian Ghomeshi. “Billy Bob Thornton has finally shown his nicer side. He has apologized and said, ”˜I love Canada absolutely,' ” said Shearer. “Hey, and I'm going to Vancouver this week. So do I.”

The Unwigged & Unplugged Tour, which also features This Is Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind cocreators Christopher Guest and Michael McKean, appears at the Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts (777 Homer Street) on Friday (April 17).

Saw Unwigged last night. Unbelievably good. Why are "mock" bands better than real bands? Perfect mix of comedy and excellent musicianship. Mock On!
