UBC math department site offers look at B.C. students’ numeracy skills

The Fraser Institute’s staff aren’t the only data wonks ranking schools.

Head to the UBC mathematics department’s Web site for a hard-nosed look at the numeracy skills of the provinces’ brightest and best.

The top 2005 local achievers in first-year calculus were students who graduated from West Vancouver schools, according to the site. Just seven percent of them failed, but their average marks plummeted from 89 percent in high school to 69 percent at UBC.

The school district with the worst showing was Delta. In 2005, 15 percent failed first-year calculus at UBC, and marks fell from 89 percent to 64 percent.
