Munde U.K. De is another half-baked, cliché-ridden NRI story

Starring Jimmy Sheirgill, Gurpreet Ghuggi, and Neeru Bajwa. Directed by Manmohan Singh. Rated G.

Munde U.K. De (Boys from the U.K.) boasts that it’s a story of two Non-Resident Indians who are “British by Right Punjabi by Heart!” But with a lame plot and largely clichéd characters, this is another half-baked NRIs-in-the-Punjab tale from veteran director-cinematographer Manmohan Singh.

Bollywood star Jimmy Shergill and Vancouver-raised actor Neeru Bajwa headline the romantic comedy, playing Roop Singh and Reetu Brar respectively. Roop and his best bud DJ (Gurpreet Ghuggi) make a trek to the ancestral village of his father to visit his grandfather in an effort to right the wrongs of his father, who never returned home after marriage.

But the film isn’t concerned with the issue of parental alienation and soon our two U.K. boys get on with their shallow adventures in a foreign land where they are the butt of jokes. As is the case in many of these films, soon the boys find love interests and there are the usual cultural conflicts that create hurdles in getting the girl before everything is conveniently resolved.

The problem is that at two-and-a-half hours, this film is way too long to dramatically sustain itself so director Singh is forced to create numerous story tangents that only make up dead space. And the intermittent song and dance numbers can only do so much to liven-up the film.

Both Shergill and Bajwa do the best with what’s given to them but the superficiality of their characters don’t allow them to breathe any life into the characters.

But popular actor-comedian Ghuggi, who’s become Punjabi cinema’s version of Jim Carrey, does get to flex his huge talent. He single handedly carries the film with a very nuanced and controlled performance, right down to the accent and mannerisms of Indo-British lads. Ghuggi is the lifeblood of the film, leaving the audience with laughter and paisa vasool (your money’s worth).

this film is so embarassing! nearlly killed myself in the cinema, how can freshies get it so wrong and who the hell would dress like that in England? you'll get shot walking down the road in fucking gold trainers. If the guy is from the UK why does he have a freshie accent? honestly embarassing and cliched.

How white are you? Calling them freshies... you should be ashamed. I bet your one of those UK sluts who probably screwed any white guy that showed interest in you.

I agree with muffinchoco, this article is shit. He does not know what he is talking about. We should compare this movie with other Punjabi movies not Hollywood or bollywood movies. I don't watch Hindi or Punjabi movies but my family does, so i watched this movie and i think its a very good movie, its time we start supporting Punjabi language and Punjabi cinema.
