Gillis, Vigneault meet the media to reflect on Canucks season, look ahead to busy summer

With a few days to look back on the end of the Vancouver Canucks season, general manager Mike Gillis and head coach Alain Vigneault held court with the media at General Motors Place Thursday afternoon (May 14). Among the topics covered:

Ӣ Gillis said he plans to extend the contracts of Vigneault and his entire coaching staff in the off-season
Ӣ Gillis announced a new two-year contract for winger Steve Bernier, who scored 15 goals and missed about three times that many golden opportunities. The 24-year-old winger works hard, but struggles with his foot speed. The Canucks say they will help Bernier address on-ice and conditioning issues over the summer
Ӣ Gillis says he has every intention of signing Daniel and Henrik Sedin rather than letting them walk away as unrestricted free agents on July 1
Ӣ Gillis says he will discuss long-term contract extensions with both Roberto Luongo and Ryan Kesler after July 1. Both players are heading into the final years of their current contracts. Gillis did say that he wouldn't have an issue with Luongo playing into the final year of his deal without signing an extension with the Canucks. The GM says he hopes to continue building a winner here so that Luongo will want to stay and be a part of it
Ӣ Vigneault revealed a number of players require surgery in these days following playoff elimination: Pavol Demitra (shoulder), Taylor Pyatt (knee scope), Alex Burrows (bone chip removal from his wrist), Ryan Johnson (finger)
