Mr. Chi Pig hits silver screen

A feature documentary about a local hero will be screened at the Pacific Cinémathí¨que on September 1. Sean Patrick Shaul’s Open Your Mouth and Say”¦ Mr. Chi Pig was filmed in Vancouver last year, and includes interviews with Broken Social Scene’s Brendan Canning, among many others.

Shaul told the Straight that the tireless SNFU frontman was perplexed when he first pitched the idea to him. “He was like, ”˜Why would anyone wanna do my story?’ He was open but curious as to why anyone would care.”

Once onboard, Pig was “totally game”. “He said, ”˜If you want to tell the story, then tell the whole story,’ ” Shaul explained. The film covers Pig’s struggle with addiction and “a wide-ranging cocktail of mental illnesses”.

SNFU cofounder Marc Belke supported the project but didn’t go on camera, although Shaul was blown away by interviewee Jello Biafra. “He is an SNFU fanboy,“ said Shaul. “He knew everything about him.”

Pacific Cinematheque's website says nothing of this. Is it for sure?
