Kidnapped Canadian journalist Amanda Lindhout released
Amanda Lindhout, the young Canadian journalist who was kidnapped in Somalia 15 months ago, has been freed according to several news sources.
CBC News reported the 28-year-old freelancer and her colleague, Australian photographer Nigel Brennan, have been released and are in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.
Roadside kidnappers abducted Lindhout and Brennan on August 23, 2008, while they tried to visit a displaced persons camp near Mogadishu.
Somalian journalist Abdifatah Mohammed Elmi, who was working as their interpreter, and two drivers were also captured but were released in January 2009.
Lindhout spoke with CTV News shortly after being freed today (November 25) but had minimal details on the terms of her release; however, she did state that had been beaten and tortured. Earlier this year it was rumored that one of Lindhout’s captors had impregnated her during her captivity but the story was never confirmed.
