UBC's Chan Centre a semifinalist in Creative Campus Innovations program
The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts is the only Canadian semifinalist in a prestigious campus arts-funding competition.
In 2006, the Washington, D.C.-based Association of Performing Arts Presenters launched the Creative Campus Innovations granting program with funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
In August 2010, up to 10 one- to two-year grants will be awarded, with prizes ranging from $100,000 to $200,000.
The Chan Centre, which is at the University of British Columbia's Point Grey campus, has proposed developing a program to address aboriginal issues through the performing arts.
The campus is on land claimed by the Musqueam First Nation. The Chan Centre, which was created as a result of a grant by businessmen Caleb and Tom Chan, has suggested that it will work closely on its program with the UBC Museum of Anthropology and the UBC First Nations House of Learning.
The facility has three venues: the Chan Shun Concert Hall (named after the Chan brothers' father), the Telus Studio Theatre, and the Royal Bank Cinema.
