Cory Weeds saxes up third album

Either things really do go in threes for Cory Weeds, or January is just a lucky month for the Vancouver saxophonist and owner of the Cellar restaurant and jazz club. He’s about to record his third solo album in as many years on his premises—in January, like his first two releases. And he’s got Joey DeFrancesco, one of the greatest Hammond B-3 organists, playing with him for three nights.

“Joey was in town in January a year ago playing at the club,” Weeds told the Straight, explaining how the pattern unfolds. “I sat in with the guys on the last night and had a blast. Afterwards Joey said, ”˜Man, you swing great. What would it take for me to do a record with you up here?’ The club has afforded me a lot of great opportunities, but to play with a musician of that stature is thrilling. When something like that comes up, you jump on it.”

DeFrancesco is known for his monstrous chops, showman’s flair, and smouldering energy. He’s released more than 20 albums, worked with greats such as Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, Elvin Jones, and John McLaughlin, and records with Weeds at the Cellar next Friday to Sunday (January 8 to 10).
