Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards: J'ai tué ma mí¨re, Up in the Air scoop up multiple awards

      The Vancouver film reviewers have spoken: Up in the Air and J'ai tué me mere won the most honours at the tenth annual Vancouver Film Critics Circle awards.

      At a ceremony held the Railway Club on Monday (January 11), the VFCC announced Up in the Air as the best film of 2009 (beating A Serious Man and The Hurt Locker). The comedy (which led with six nominations) also won best screenplay (Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner), and Vera Farmiga, who plays the love interest of George Clooney's character, beat her costar Anna Kendrick for best supporting actress.

      Kathryn Bigelow was named best director for her gritty war drama  The Hurt Locker, managing to beat stiff competition: Up in the Air's Jason Reitman and Inglourious Basterds' Quentin Taratino.

      Meanwhile, the acclaimed Quebec box office hit J'ai tué ma mí¨re collected four of its five nominations in the Canadian categories: best Canadian film (beating Polytechnique and The Young Victoria), best actor and director (Xavier Dolan), and  best supporting actor (Franí§ois Arnaud).

      Facing Ali, Pete McCormack's documentary about Muhammad Ali, won the best British Columbia film award (defeating A Shine of  Rainbows and Excited).  Meanwhile,  Anvil! The Story of Anvil, about aging Toronto heavy-metal pioneers  trying to mount a European tour, was named best documentary.

      Emily Blunt took the award for best actress in a Canadian film for The Young Victoria while local thespian Gabrielle Rose won best supporting actress for Excited.

      France's Summer Hours by Olivier Assayas won the best foreign language film.

      As previously announced, two achievement awards (for contribution to B.C.'s film industry) went out to Festival Cinemas co-owner Leonard Schein (presented by Vancouver International Film Festival director Alan Franey) and documentary filmmaker Nettie Wild (presented by  the Georgia Straight's Ken Eisner).
