Simon Fraser University has announced the appointment of Andrew Petter as its new president and vice-chancellor, effective September 1.

Petter  is a former  NDP attorney general, aboriginal affairs minister,  finance minister, advanced education minister, forests minister, health minister, and minister of intergovernmental relations. From 2002 to 2008, he was the dean of law at the University of Victoria. He also taught law at UVic before winning the seat in Saanich South in the 1991 provincial election. He didn't run in 2001.

Petter  will  become  SFU's ninth president, succeeding Michael Stevenson, who  will complete his  second five-year term this year.

SFU has campuses on Burnaby Mountain, in downtown Vancouver, and in Surrey.

Stevenson leaves the university having presided over the development of the UniverCity community on Burnaby Mountain, SFU's takeover of TechBC in Surrey, the expansion of the downtown campus, several tuition fee hikes, and the establishment of faculties of environment; health sciences; and communication, art, and technology.

Incoming Simon Fraser University president Andrew Petter reflects on what makes SFU deserving of its title as Canada's top comprehensive university.

I graduated from Simon Fraser University. My daughter is getting closer to graduating from there (and also was fortunate to be hired at the SFU art museum-(pride here)--many of my friends are from 'Simon'.

      I like Simon Fraser University.

How can such an excellent educational institution not have a proper Canadian History program. Right now it's poverty stricken, and Simon Fraser has been determined, and has sold itself as a comprehensive University. I agree, save the Canadian (and BC) studies.

I remember my father taking me to the Confederation Train in 1967. At eleven years old it had a huge impression on me. I hope Mr. Petter who is an excellent choice in my opinion--will take steps to ensure better for Canadian and B.C. studies at Simon Fraser University.
