Vancouver cops decide to visit anti-Olympic activist Franklin López

An East Van multimedia commentator responsible for branding the Olympic rings “the five cock rings of death” has confirmed two police officers dropped by his studio.

Franklin López, self-described “media maker” and creator and founder of subMedia TV, told the Straight he filmed footage of American sportswriter Dave Zirin’s talk on January 20 at the Maritime Labour Centre in East Vancouver.

“My studio is very close to the Maritime Centre, so I walked here [to work] to drop off my equipment and then got on my bike to go home,” López said. “Then, probably an hour after I dropped off my equipment, one of the people that rents space from me here called me up and said, ”˜Hey, the cops were just looking for you.’ I said, ”˜What?’ They were like, ”˜Yep, the cops want to talk to you.’ ”

López said he refused to call either of the two intelligence investigators who left business cards with his tenant: Warren Tyson from the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit and Mike Smook from the Joint Intelligence Group.

“I personally thought it was going to happen sooner or later,” López said, adding that he produced a promo video for the Olympic Resistance Network. “It still is a little bit intrusive. What disturbed me was the way the people I work with at the space had to deal with it, and the fact they [the officers] thought I was lying by insisting that I was there in the building.”

RCMP Staff Sgt. Mike Cote, with ISU media relations, did not return a message from the Straight.

“That [promo video] got linked to No2010.com, which is, essentially, [activist] Gord Hill’s Web site,” López said. “Seeing the way the police have been visiting all the anti-Olympic activists in town, I guess now I am on their radar and now they decided to visit me because I produced this video.”

Either that or they need clarification on what a cock ring is.
