Vancouver police charge man with assault for allegedly spitting on cops during Olympic protest

      The Vancouver Police Department has charged a 19-year-old man with assault for allegedly spitting in officers’ faces during an anti-Olympic protest on February 12.

      “Two officers on patrol last night at 11:45 p.m. in the 800 block of Granville Street recognized a man from the protest which took place on February 12th at Beatty and Robson Street,” the VPD said in a statement issued today (Feburary 25). “The officers, who were on the front lines that day, had seen the man allegedly assault police officers by repeatedly spitting in their faces.”

      Dylan Roger Thomas Harvey, a Vancouver resident, has been charged with three counts of assaulting a peace officer.

      His next court appearance is set for March 5 at 9 a.m.

      Police said they have arrested 12 people but charged only six in connection with “vandalism and criminal activity” during the protests on February 12 and 13.

      Double Standard

      The Vancouver Police Department has dismissed a complaint filed by Clayton Wilson, an SFU graduate student and employee of the university’s bookstore. Last month, the Straight reported Wilson’s allegation that he was beaten up and kneed in the torso three times by a Vancouver plainclothes officer in May 2008 because he wouldn’t drop an umbrella at the command of another plainclothes officer.
