Canada gets back into Stephen Colbert's good books

Canadians everywhere are rejoicing as comedian Stephen Colbert took our nation off his “On Notice” board last night (February 25) during his final show from Vancouver.

Could it be that Canadians have graciously warmed their way back into the heart of the man who called the country “Europe with toilets”?

Well maybe it’s not a complete love affair—but it has been one hell of a ride in the process. In his final show live from the 2010 Olympics, Colbert couldn’t help but take a few last digs at us.

We were reminded of our inability to “own the podium" in a segment called “Cheer up Canada”, which featured a montage of all things Canadian, including staples like moose and maple syrup. It was all in good fun of course but the “accidental” footage of the U.S. men’s hockey team celebrating their win on February 21 spliced in at the end still managed to sting a little.

(But hey, if there's one thing we can do as a country it's forgive the little blunder—and go on to kick some U.S. ass should we meet in the gold medal hockey game on February 28.)

Canadians put aside, the U.S. satirist managed to get one more visit in with the U.S. speed skating team. Doing what he does best, Colbert gave a hilarious “motivational” speech to the team, reminding them that failure is not an option.

“I’ve told a lot of people you’re going to win,” he said. “So if you don’t, you’re going to make me look like a jerk.”

He also let the team in on a little secret about the generous $300,000 that was given to them in order to make their Olympic dreams come true.

“That wasn’t a donation,” he said with the usual stern voice. “A lot of that was mob juice money”¦ and they are humorless about this.”

But with six medals in hand, the U.S. speed skating team has surely done the Colbert Nation proud. In a rare heartwarming moment, Colbert interviewed gold and silver medal winner Shani Davis by satellite. Davis hung his medals around his neck and graciously thanked Stephen Colbert and the Colbert Nation for all their support.

And so came to an end a week of laughter and a few cheap shots. The crowd ate it up as Colbert thanked them all and bid adieu to Vancouver and the 2010 Olympics.
