The Hurt Locker: best director and best picture Oscars

History was made at the Oscars tonight. And realism won over fantasy.

Kathryn Bigelow won the best directing Oscar for her gritty war drama The Hurt Locker.

She broke into the all-boys club to become the first woman to win the award.

Only three other women have ever been nominated in this category: Lina Wertmí¼ller (1975's Seven Beauties), Jane Campion (1993's The Piano), and Sofia Coppola (2003's Lost in Translation)

She beat out her ex-husband James Cameron (Avatar), who previously won the best directing Oscar for Titanic in 1998, as well as Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds), Lee Daniels (Precious), and Jason Reitman (Up in the Air).

The film also scooped up best picture, defeating nine other titles, including Avatar. In the end, The Hurt Locker won six awards while Avatar won three.

Congrats to all the winners.
